8 Places to Run Fast in Flagstaff, Arizona

If you're a runner looking for places to run fast and that isn’t Lake Mary Road or Buffalo Park, we’ve listed (and created GPS routes) of 8 of our favorite places to log a good workout.

1. Trina's Loop

Trina's Loop, named after Flagstaff legend and Flagstaff High School’s XC and Track Coach, Trina Painter, is a convenient and accessible option for those looking to get in a fast effort.

This roughly 1-mile loop boasts a minimal change in grade, which make it easy to hit fast splits. Located in a low-traffic, low-speed residential area, Trina's Loop provides a great setting without interruptions.

Additionally, it offers easy access to the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) and Highway 180, providing opportunities for warm-up and cool-down. Parking is street-side and also easily accessible by a short from local parks and trailheads.

2. Quintana/Hattie Green

For a slightly longer route with varied terrain, consider the beautiful neighborhood route known as Quintana/Hattie Green.

This 1.5-mile loop offers a gradual uphill on one side and a gradual downhill on the other, which makes for a slightly tougher place to run fast, but still a wonderful option for challenging yourself.

Quintana/Hattie Green provides easy access to popular locations such as Shultz Pass Road, Elden Lookout Road, Buffalo Park, and the Arizona Trail (AZT). When parking, it's recommended to utilize Elden Lookout Road, as there is no street or forest service parking within the neighborhood.

3. Doney Park

Doney Park features a roughly 1.75-mile loop and is known for being one of the flattest and fastest-running routes in Flagstaff. If you prefer shorter loops, it's easy to modify the distance accordingly.

There is endless room for warm-ups and cool-downs on nice wide roads within the neighborhood. And with both street parking and forest service road parking available, you can conveniently start your run.

Doney does tend to be hotter and more exposed than our other options on the list, so be sure to plan ahead and bring extra water and sunscreen.

4. Kiltie Loop

If you're looking for a rolling route that offers a relatively fast pace, the Kiltie Loop is an excellent choice.

This approximately 1-mile loop includes an option to add an additional 0.5-mile loop, allowing you to customize the distance to your preference.

The Kiltie Loop offers easy access to both trail and road surfaces for warming up and cooling down, making it an easy choice for a workout venue.

5. Mountain Shadows

For a flat and minimal change in elevation, as well as an incredible view, try the Mountain Shadows loop.

With a 1-mile circumference, this route provides ample low-traffic roads and access to dirt trails for your warm-up and cool-down routines.

Keep in mind that the spring months may bring windy conditions, so prepare accordingly to fully enjoy your run.

6. Baderville 2km

If you're seeking a slightly longer route with a predominantly flat surface with net to no traffic, try the Baderville loop.

This 1.25-mile loop offers light variations in grade, which will ensure you’re able to hit your paces without the worry of hills.

Parking is street-side, however, there are several forest service options that allow for parking within the area as well.

7. Old Walnut Canyon Road

Old Walnut Canyon Road offers a scenic 2-mile one-way route that gradually ascends on the way out and descends on the way back. If you continue on Old Walnut Canyon road, eventually the route will turn to dirt, still making for a great run, but certainly not as fast as the paved section.

This route provides easy access to the Campbell Mesa Trails and ample parking options. It's an excellent choice if you enjoy a mix of challenging terrain and beautiful surroundings.

8. Cobblestone Cir

For more a challenging route, Cobblestone Cir fits the bill.

This 0.5-mile loop features uphill and downhill sections that keep you on your toes for the entire loop. We find this place is great training for hillier courses that require a lot of change in pace. It offers easy access to the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) and provides an ideal setting for a focused, high-intensity run.

Parking can be found along the street and easily accessed from local parks and trailheads.

So, if you’ve been wondering where you can squeeze in a solid session in Flagstaff, check out one of these options!
